Touge
Culture

The touge way is not about speed—it's about harmony between driver, machine, and mountain. Understanding this philosophy is essential before engaging with Gunma's sacred passes.

The Touge Philosophy

Rhythm Over Speed

The mountain demands flow, not force. A perfectly timed apex at 60km/h teaches more than a rushed corner at 100km/h. True masters read the road's rhythm and dance with it.

"速さではなく、リズムを見つけることです" — Find the rhythm, not the speed.

Respect the Mountain

The touge is not a racetrack. It is living terrain, shared with residents, cyclists, and wildlife. Every driver carries the reputation of the entire community.

"山は見ている" — The mountain is watching.

Machine Empathy

Your car is not a tool—it's a partner. Listen to tire squeal, feel brake fade, sense weight transfer. The best drivers don't fight their machines; they communicate with them.

"車と一緒に呼吸する" — Breathe together with your car.

Continuous Improvement

Kaizen (改善) applies to driving. Each run reveals weaknesses. The goal is not perfection, but perpetual refinement. Yesterday's best time is today's baseline.

"昨日の自分を超える" — Surpass yesterday's self.

groups

Driver to Driver

  • Flash hazards to say "thank you" when given space

  • Never tailgate or pressure slower drivers
  • Share route conditions via CB radio (ch. 9)
  • Offer assistance if you see a broken-down vehicle
nature

Environmental Care

  • Stay on paved roads—no off-road excursions
  • Don't discard cigarettes or waste from windows
  • Respect wildlife crossings (deer/boar active at dusk)
  • Avoid excessive tire smoke (環境への配慮)
  • Use designated parking areas only

! What NOT to Do

block Absolutely Forbidden

  • Street Racing: Illegal in Japan. Arrests = deportation.
  • Drifting on Public Roads: Endangers others, destroys reputation.
  • Crossing Center Lines: Two-way traffic always. No exceptions.
  • Alcohol: Zero tolerance. 0.03% BAC = criminal offense.
  • Modified Exhausts: Japan's noise laws are strict (98dB max).

warning Strongly Discouraged

  • Weekend Peak Hours: Crowded roads = unsafe conditions.
  • Inadequate Tires: Worn tires on mountain passes = disaster.
  • Overconfidence: The mountain humbles everyone eventually.
  • Ignoring Weather: Fog/rain changes everything. Know when to stop.
  • No Pre-Check: Always inspect brakes/fluids before a run.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring / Summer (Apr-Sep)

Best conditions for driving. Dry roads, clear visibility. Watch for:

  • • Cyclists on weekends (especially Saturdays)
  • • Increased police presence during Golden Week
  • • Afternoon thunderstorms in July/August
  • • Tourist buses on popular routes

Autumn (Oct-Nov)

Peak foliage season. Roads extremely crowded with sightseers. Benefits:

  • • Cool temperatures = better engine performance
  • • Stunning scenery for photography
  • • Avoid weekends if serious driving is the goal
  • • Watch for fallen leaves reducing grip

Winter (Dec-Mar)

Advanced drivers only. Snow/ice present. Requirements:

  • • Studless winter tires mandatory (スタッドレス)
  • • Chains required for some passes
  • • Many routes closed above 1000m elevation
  • • Beautiful but extremely technical

Photography Etiquette

Capturing memories is encouraged. Respectful practices:

  • • Park completely off roadway (use shoulders/pullouts)
  • • Don't block traffic for "the shot"
  • • Respect private property boundaries
  • • Ask permission before photographing locals

「尊敬は速度よりも強い」

"Respect is more powerful than speed."
