FUJIWARA
TOFU SHOP

The real tofu shop that became Initial D's most iconic location. For five years, fiction and reality occupied the same address in Shibukawa. Then the owner died, the shop closed, and a legend ended. But the sign survives—in a museum, where pilgrims still come to see it.

01 FROM FUJINO TO FUJIWARA

The real shop was called Fujino Tofu Shop, run by Mr. Fujinoki in Shibukawa, Gunma—the city that sits at the base of Mount Haruna. For decades it operated quietly, producing tofu for local customers, nothing remarkable, just honest work. Then in 2005, film producers approached Mr. Fujinoki with an unusual request: could they change his shop's sign for a movie?

The movie was the live-action Initial D adaptation. The shop they needed to film was Fujiwara Tofu Shop—the fictional business owned by Bunta Fujiwara, father of protagonist Takumi. The producers needed a real tofu shop in Shibukawa that looked period-appropriate. Fujino Tofu Shop was perfect.

Mr. Fujinoki agreed. They changed the sign from "Fujino" to "Fujiwara"—a one-character difference in Japanese, but a transformation in meaning. After filming wrapped, Mr. Fujinoki decided to keep the sign. Why not? Initial D fans were already making pilgrimages to the area. Having the actual Fujiwara Tofu Shop sign felt appropriate, a small gift to enthusiasts who loved the series.

For five years, fiction and reality coexisted at that address. You could buy actual tofu from the shop whose sign read "Fujiwara Tofu Shop (self-service)." Fans visited daily, taking photos, buying tofu, thanking Mr. Fujinoki for maintaining this connection between manga and the real world. He was gracious, welcoming, proud that his shop had become part of something larger.

02 THE DAY THE SIGN CAME DOWN

Mr. Fujinoki passed away in 2008. The shop closed in 2009. In 2010, the building was demolished—routine urban renewal, nothing dramatic, just a vacant property cleared for redevelopment. But the sign was saved.

Today, the original Fujiwara Tofu Shop sign resides in the Ikaho Toy, Doll & Car Museum, alongside a replica of the storefront. The museum is located in Ikaho, the hot spring town at the base of Mount Haruna—the same route Initial D fans drive to reach the lake. You can see the actual sign that hung above a real tofu shop for five years, preserving that brief moment when fiction became tangible.

The site where the shop once stood is now empty land. No plaque. No marker. Just another vacant lot in Shibukawa. Google Maps still shows the location, and occasionally confused tourists arrive expecting to find the shop, discovering only absence. Some are disappointed. Others understand: Initial D was always about transience—the fleeting moment when car and driver and road align perfectly before conditions change.

"The shop is gone, but what it represented—that connection between manga and reality—that can't be demolished. It exists in memory now, which is appropriate for Initial D."

03 WHERE TO PAY RESPECTS

If you want to see the sign, visit the Ikaho Toy, Doll & Car Museum. It's on your way to Mount Haruna anyway—Ikaho Onsen is the traditional starting point for the climb to Lake Haruna. The museum houses extensive Initial D memorabilia alongside its toy collections, and the Fujiwara Tofu Shop sign is displayed prominently with respect for what it represents.

You can also visit D'z Racing Cafe Garage, a privately-run Initial D themed establishment in Shibukawa. It's become the de facto gathering spot for fans since the tofu shop closed—a place to get coffee, see Initial D cars and memorabilia, meet other enthusiasts, and plan your drive up the mountain. The owner is friendly, passionate, and knowledgeable about all things Initial D and Gunma touge culture.

As for the original shop location, it's at the coordinates 36.4897°N, 138.9302°E if you want to visit. There's nothing there. But standing on that empty lot, knowing that thousands of fans once visited to photograph a tofu shop sign, understanding that for five years a manga location existed in physical reality—that's its own kind of pilgrimage. Sometimes absence speaks louder than presence.

The tofu was excellent, by the way. Mr. Fujinoki knew his craft. That matters too.
