Lake Onuma on Mt Akagi with bare hills around it

Akagi, Myogi, Usui

Beyond Haruna, Initial D draws on three more places in Gunma: Mt Akagi for the RedSuns, Mt Myogi for the NightKids and Usui Pass on the Nagano border. Here is what each is in the story and what is really there.

Mt Akagi: RedSuns territory

In Initial D, Mt Akagi is the home course of the RedSuns, the team of the Takahashi brothers. Wikipedia says portions of Gunma Route 4 on the mountain feature in numerous episodes. The Japanese Wikipedia also lists the Akagi RedSuns as the street-racing group based on the mountain.

The real Akagi is a stratovolcano whose highest peak, Kurobiyama, is about 1,828 m. At its centre is Lake Onuma, a caldera lake at roughly 1,360 m. Beside it is the smaller Lake Konuma, a crater lake. Akagi Shrine stands on Onuma's shore, and a small shrine sits on an island in the lake.

Gunma's tourism site describes Onuma as a summer lake with campgrounds, rental boats and small inns. Most restaurants, the main bus stop and the parking are at the south end. Hiking, including the Mt Kurobi route, is the main draw.

Getting to Akagi

From Tokyo, take the Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki, then the Ryomo Line to Maebashi. A Kan-etsu Transportation bus from Maebashi Station's north exit takes about 30 minutes to Fujimi Onsen. A second bus continues to the Akagi Park Visitor Center. By car it is about 60 minutes from Akagi IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway.

Some mountain roads close for the winter. Visit Gunma lists the stretch between Akagi Onsen and Konuma as closed from mid-December to early April. Check the current status before you go.

Mt Myogi: NightKids territory

Mt Myogi is the home course of the Myogi NightKids and the setting for four races in the story, according to Wikipedia. The Japanese Wikipedia also lists it as the team's home ground.

The real mountain is a jagged ridge of eroded volcanic rock on the borders of Annaka, Tomioka and Shimonita. The summit, Somadake, is about 1,104 m. It is one of Japan's 200 Famous Mountains and one of the Three Mountains of Joshu.

Myogi Shrine sits on the slope of Hakuun-zan. It is said to date from 537 and is an Important Cultural Property. Its buildings have lacquered finish and detailed carvings, and it is surrounded by cedars said to be 500 years old. Michi-no-Eki Myogi, a roadside station with a tourist information centre, stands near the shrine's first torii gate.

Hiking trails run from gentle to very hard. The rugged terrain has caused many accidents, so stay on the easier routes unless you are experienced.

Usui Pass and the C-121 corner

In Initial D, Usui Pass is the home course of Impact Blue. Wikipedia says Takumi races a SilEighty driven by Mako Sato there. A tour page on Gowithguide describes a run of tight consecutive hairpins and a corner labelled C-121, and lists Ogino-ya restaurant as a place tied to the SilEighty battle.

We could not confirm where a corner labelled C-121 is on the real road. Treat any specific spot as fan-identified until a better source appears.

Usui Pass is on the border between Gunma and Nagano at about 956 m, according to the Japanese Wikipedia. Old National Route 18 is about 11 km long and has around 184 curves. The Usui Bypass opened in 1971 and became toll-free in 2001, and the Joshin-etsu Expressway opened in 1993.

The old road is narrow with many sharp curves. English Wikipedia says it was closed for several months in 2024 because of a landslip and is popular with cyclists when open. Check the current status.

What else to see at Usui

The brick Megane Bridge, formally Usui Third Bridge, belongs to the former rail line over the pass and is a designated cultural property. The Shin-etsu Main Line crossed the pass from 1893 to 1997 and a museum now stands at the former locomotive shed site at Yokokawa. Kumano Shrine stands near the summit.

Visiting responsibly

All three places are used by residents, hikers, cyclists and tourists. Drive within the law. Racing or drifting on public roads is illegal and dangerous. Touge Town's drift day takes place only on the closed Gunsai course.

Use car parks, keep noise down near shrines and homes, and do not stop on narrow carriageways. For the Haruna side of the story see mt-haruna-akina, and for the overview see initial-d-gunma-locations.
