Initial D country

Initial D is set on Gunma's mountain passes, and many of its places have real counterparts. This guide lists the ones we could check, grades the evidence for each, and corrects a few claims that circulate online.

What this guide covers

Initial D is a manga by Shuichi Shigeno that began in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine in 1995. It ran for 719 chapters in 48 volumes until 2013, according to Wikipedia. The story is set in Gunma Prefecture, around several mountains of the Kanto region.

Mt Haruna, Mt Akagi and Mt Myogi are the real mountains behind the story's Akina, Akagi and Myogi. Wikipedia says the fictionalised names sit on real places. This guide goes beyond the mountains to the towns, shops and streets that fans visit from Tokyo.

Touge Town is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Initial D manga, its publisher, studios or rights holders. We use no images from the manga or anime.

On the map

Pin numbers match the list. Places without published coordinates are placed by Google’s search and shown as hollow pins: approximate.

How we grade the evidence

Every place carries an evidence label and a confidence level. Exact match means a source we opened ties the story scene to one identifiable real spot. Approximate match means a real mountain or road stands behind a fictional name. Inspired by means a real place or business was the model, but the story changed it. Fan-identified means the link comes from fan compilations such as Anime Pilgrimage or Minkara and no official source confirms it.

Confidence is high when two independent sources agree, medium when one reliable source supports it, and low when it rests on a single fan post. Where we found no source, we leave the place out.

The owner's research register uses its own wording, such as High, Community-identified, Historic site and Approximate. We keep that wording in the text where it matters, and we publish a place only where a page we opened supports it.

The places at a glance

The table below lists every place we could verify. The mountains are covered in their own guides, and Shibukawa and Ikaho have separate pages.

Akina is based on Mt Haruna, and Wikipedia says Lake Haruna appears in the story as Lake Akina. Mt Akagi is the home course of the Red Suns, and Mt Myogi is the home course of the Night Kids. Usui Pass is the home course of Impact Blue.

In Shibukawa, the city confirms seven manhole designs and the museum recreation of the tofu shop. Film scene matches such as the stone steps, the Yaseone Pass and the numbered curves come from fan maps.

78 scenes, not 78 places

Anime Pilgrimage maps the three Initial D Legend films with 24, 22 and 32 spots. That gives 78 documented scene-to-location references. They are not 78 unique places.

The same locations appear in more than one film. For example, Takane Observation Deck, the Oasis Kogenchi petrol station, Yaseone Pass, Hotel Kimura and several numbered curves recur. Most spots are in Shibukawa. The second film's list has 21 in Shibukawa and one in Isesaki, and the third has 29 in Shibukawa and three in Takasaki. These are fan-compiled, not official.

Curve numbers on Anime Pilgrimage are not the same as the numbers on road signs, and they are not surveyed positions. We publish no coordinates for any corner.

Corrections

The tofu shop building. Some pages say the original building was moved to the Ikaho Toy, Doll and Car Museum. The museum's tourism page says the shop is recreated inside the museum, and Car Watch says the genuine items are the signboard and cooking tools. We say recreated.

The petrol station. The owner's research notes say the Initial D Wiki on Fandom reports that the fictional Esso station's visual model is in Nerima, Tokyo. We could not open Fandom to check, so we pass it on as reported and unverified. The fan map lists a real petrol station in Shibukawa as a film scene, but that is a film-scene match and not the manga's model.

The Akina downhill start. Fans link it to the former Yaseone toll gate. The city placed a manhole at the former toll gate site on Yaseone Pass, and the Gunma tourism guide lists the pass as a start point for the downhill, noting that only a water tower remains. We treat this as a tourism-guide match, not a surveyed one.

The family restaurant. We could not identify it from any source.

The Takahashi mansion. We found no source for a real, visitable residence, and we do not suggest looking for one.

The museum's location. It is listed in Shibukawa on some pages, but its official address is in Yoshioka town.

The tofu shop. The old shop no longer operates, and we do not publish its address. Do not visit the old site or any private home for photographs.

Road manners and recognition

Shibukawa runs an official Initial D collaboration site with manhole covers, frame stamps, lodging plans and goods. On 19 February 2026 Gunma Prefecture announced that it had been selected, for the first time, as an Initial D location in the Anime Tourism Association's Anime Pilgrimage Sites to Visit in Japan 88. The selection covers Gunma as a whole.

The mountain roads are live public roads. Never park, stop or pose in a traffic lane, keep clear of bus stops, and use designated car parks, as the Gunma tourism guides ask. Gunsai, the closed course in Minakami, is a separate venue with its own booking rules.
